NGO CSW66 Forum Online (Zoom) Side Event
Organized by the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW), Rutgers University School of Social Work (USA), and Studio Samuel (Ethiopia)
Grassroots Empowerment Approaches that Give Girls a Voice
Monday, March 21, 2022 8:00 am – 9:30 am (EST)
Integrating a curriculum in social work education on Empowering the Girl Child is a key strategy for building capacity of social workers to advance agency and give voice to girls 12-18 for
achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 – Gender Equality, and related SDG’s (SDG 4 – Quality Education; SDG 13 – Climate Action; SDG 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions; and SDG 17 – Partnerships. Social work students will present research on child marriage, menstrual justice, and unequal access to education and how they exacerbate the girl child’s risks to climate change and limit access to disaster-risk reduction. Social workers and social work students will engage with girls from, Studio Samuel, a girl’s empowerment NGO in Ethiopia, about community-engaged solutions for risk-reduction, equal access, and capacity needs for girl-serving programs.
