{"id":3411,"date":"2019-03-18T17:37:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T12:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iassw-aiets.org\/shadow_old\/?p=3411"},"modified":"2019-03-18T18:04:07","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T12:34:07","slug":"iassw-and-ifsw-to-update-global-standards-for-social-work-education-and-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iassw-aiets.org\/shadow_old\/news\/3411-iassw-and-ifsw-to-update-global-standards-for-social-work-education-and-training\/","title":{"rendered":"IASSW and IFSW to update Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, 18 March 2019<\/p><p><strong>IASSW and IFSW to update Global Standards\nfor Social Work Education and Training. <\/strong><\/p><p>The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and the\nInternational Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) have initiated a\njoint process of reviewing and updating the Global Standards for Social Work Education and\nTraining. <\/p><p>The current\nversion of the Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training document\nwas adopted at the IASSW and IFSW General Assemblies in Adelaide, Australia in\n2004.&nbsp; Over the last fifteen years this\ndocument has served as an aspirational guide setting out the requirements for\nexcellence in social work education. <\/p><p>However, the\nsocial work education and practice landscape, has changed significantly since\n2004. The adoption of a new Global Definition of Social work in July 2014 and the\npublication of the updated Global Social Work Statement of Ethical Principles\nlast year, require that the Global Standards for Social Work Education and\nTraining document is also reviewed and updated in order to reflect broader\nchanges and recent developments in global social work. &nbsp;These developments also include social work\u2019s\nrole in supporting bottom up development to meet the aspirations of the SDGs,\nensuring countries that are new to social work have global peers to support the\nadvancement of social work education free from colonial influences and creating\nplatforms for indigenous social workers to shape curricula and relevant\ncourses.<\/p><p>To this effect,\nthe two organisations have created a joint task group comprising the IFSW\nInterim Global Education Commission and IASSW\u2019s Global Standards Taskforce &nbsp;<\/p><p>Professor\nVasilios Ioakimidis, Chair of IFSW\u2019s Interim Global Education Commission\nmentioned: <em>I am delighted that we have established this joint initiative to update\nand enhance the Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training. All\nparts of the social work profession need to work together to increase our\ncapacity in facing the increasing threats to human rights and wellbeing. Both\nIFSW and IASSW are committed to facilitating an extensive and inclusive\nconsultation with social work educators, practitioners experts by experience\nand trade unionists. The joint IFSW and IASSW approach for social work, education\nshould be a dynamic process that takes into consideration the most recent global\ndevelopments in the social work profession while appreciating the diverse\npolitical, historical and cultural contexts within which future generations of\nsocial workers will be educated. <\/em><\/p><p>Professor Dixon Sookraj, Chair of IASSW Task group stated<em>: I appreciate the honour of working with colleagues at the IASSW and\nthe IFSW to undertake this critical task of updating the Global Standards. We\nwill inevitably face challenges similar to those of our predecessors who\ndeveloped the original standards. They include the task of maintaining a\ndelicate balance between detailing unifying themes and allowing sufficient flexibility\nto ensure relevance to&nbsp; local-level\nsocial work education and practice. I look forward to the ongoing dialogue and\nconsultation with colleagues across the globe.
