Symposia / Lecture on Gandhi

Symposia / Lecture on Gandhi

As you may be aware, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation to India who led India’s Independent movement with Peace and Non Violence as the main strategy (Satyagraha) has led many civil rights movement across the world particularly in South Africa.

Gandhi’s ideas have hugely influenced many leaders such as leader of land reform movement in India Vinoba Bhave, civil rights leader in the United States, Martin Luther King Jr and South African anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela to name a few. Gandhi inspired American Psychoanalyst Erik H Erikson to write a book “Gandhi’s Truth: Origins of Militant Non-violence”, explicating insights of modern psychology. Albert Einstein saw in Gandhi’s nonviolence, a possible antidote to the massive violence unleashed by the fission of the atom. Swedish Economist Gunnar Myrdal after his survey of the socioeconomic problems of the underdeveloped world, pronounced Gandhi “in practically all fields an enlightened liberal.”

Government of India has decided to celebrate 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by holding (150) Lectures/Symposia in 150 reputed foreign universities jointly with 150 reputed Indian institutions/universities. The purpose of this exercise is to allow Gandhian Thought and Philosophy to be widely disseminated in the intellectual circles. In view of this, Tata Institute of Social Sciences is planning to hold a few online Lectures/Symposia on Mahatma Gandhi in association with different foreign Universities and Scholars preferably in the month of August 2020.

I will be grateful if any of our members and colleagues who may be interested to join this initiative, write back to me at the earliest with their willingness to join this initiative.

In Solidarity
