Global Dimensions in Social Work Education

Global Dimensions in Social Work Education – Call for Proposal for SW Education Conference

Call for Proposals closes October 1, 2022

Now more than ever, the social work profession is called to action as our world is impacted by social, economic, environmental, and cultural justice issues on a global platform. During
this time of an increasingly interdependent and interconnected world, the social work profession is challenged to incorporate a global perspective in education, practice, and research that is culturally informed for the 21st century.

The infusion of global social work concepts into curricula empowers students at all levels to gain an understanding of how global events impact social work practice, policy, and
research. The Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) (2022) advocates for a “global perspective” and outlines
student competencies to “engage anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in practice (ADEI)” and “advance human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental
justice”.

In congruence with recommendations of the CSWE Commission on Global Social Work Education, the 2023 SWDE conference will focus on the development and inclusion of a
worldview of social work curricula, research, and practice. SWDE invites social work faculty from around the world to share pedagogical approaches for global social work, to
demonstrate existing trends and methods of merging best practices globally, and to establish strategies that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practice
in social work distance education.

Proposals should focus on one or more of the following three (3) core components:

1. GLOBAL SOCIAL ISSUES
• Focus on existing and emerging global trends and international social issues, highlighting their relevance to social work distance education, research, and practice.
• Explore policy implications and identify teaching considerations that impact global social work distance education, research, and practice.
• Incorporation of global and international issues into social work curriculum, research, and practice.
• Innovative social work distance education curriculum and best practices that encompass content on global social issues/social work practice.

2. GLOBAL LEARNING AND PRACTICE

  • Development and implementation of teaching modules, research, and literature that advance global and international issues in social work distance education.
  • Distance curriculum or field education opportunities that provide international experiential learning opportunities for students and/or faculty.
  • Research and publications that promote learning and exchange on global and international issues in social work distance education and practice.

3. HUMAN RIGHTS

  • Promoting awareness of human rights domestically and internationally within social work distance education.
  • Integration of advocacy and support for human rights in social work distance education curricula, research, and social work practice.
  • Integration of human rights and social, economic, environmental, and cultural justice perspectives in research, publication, social work distance education, and social work practice.
