National Council of Social Workers (CNOAS) and the World Social Work Day

National Council of Social Workers (CNOAS) and the World Social Work Day

The States General of Italian Social Workers will be held in Rome from the 21st to 23rd of March, as a nationwide celebration of the 30 years of the National Council of Social Workers (CNOAS) and the World Social Work Day. The event is organized by CNOAS, in collaboration with the Regional Councils and the main professional associations of social workers (Ass.N.A.S., AS.it, ASPROC, FNAS, SUNAS). The goal is to assess the social work progress in Italy, as a profession and as a discipline, and to collectively identify priorities and needed actions for the future.

This three-days event will bring together 6,000 social workers from all over the country, both offline and online. More than 100 speakers over three days will be involved in plenaries and workshops on several topics: poverty, health, families, diversity, professional development, interprofessional dialogue, third sector organizations, evaluation, social work competencies and skills, narratives and representations of social work, Guided by the profession’s Code of Ethics, social workers are expected to engage in the ongoing fight for equality. Italy is still addressing huge disparities among people and territories, due to socioeconomic status, gender, race, geography, sexual orientation, power and privileges. Access to social rights is still not guaranteed in many areas of the country in terms of service provisions, adequate facilities and professionals. Despite the increased public funds in the post-pandemic time, the inequalities continue to deepen, due to differences in the territorial administration capacity. Even more today, in the face of severe inequality and discriminations, the commitment of social workers to foster social justice and building solidarity is crucial to reduce the risk of escalating social conflicts.

The States General of Social Workers will start on March 21, with the celebration of the World Social Work Day, with a plenary session on the 2023 theme “Respecting Diversity through Joint Social Action”. Among the participants, in the plenary session will be: Maria Teresa Bellucci (Minister of Labor and Social Policy), Annamaria Campanini, as IASSW President, Marilena Dellavalle as Vice President of the Society for the History of Social Work, Silvia Fargion as President of the National Society of Social Work, and representatives of associations of experts by experience. The subsequent workshops will be participated by social workers, other professionals, politicians, managers of the Ministries, academics, advocacy organizations and expert by experience. Over 70 speakers will be involved, as well as social work academics as key-note speakers: Elena Allegri, Teresa Bertotti, Elena Cabiati, Francesca Falcone, Luigi Gui, Carla Moretti, Urban Nothdurfter, Annamaria Rizzo, Mara Sanfelici, Alessandro Sicora.

On March 23 the plenary is organized to celebrate the 30 Years of the National Council, with the participation of Minister of Labor and Social Policies Marina Calderone and the Minister of Justice Francesco Paolo Sisto.

Three days to conclude a journey that The National Council has started one year ago, with events around the country, to start again, with new tools, ideas, projects, on roads we already know, but which require, one day after another, more energy and more competence.
