SpringerBriefs call for abstracts due 31st of October

Call for papers for SpringerBriefs in Advancing Social Work and Social Work Education under the subseries of Advancing Social Work Education with the theme of Contemporary Issues in Social Work Education edited by Minna Zechner, Associate Professor of Social Work (Social and Health Services), University of Helsinki, Finland. Deadline 31st October 2023
SpringerBriefs series is researched based, forward looking, and contributing to professional practice and curriculum development in social work education, policy, research, training and professional development.
The aim for the theme ‘Contemporary Issues in Social Work Education’ is to provide an updated approach for the issues that social work education should be able to tackle as well as methods for doing it. It can thus work as a resource for the future of social work education.
We seek well established authors (research, education, or practise) from across the globe. The chapters are to present the topic more in a state-of-the art manner than for example as empirical studies.
SpringerBriefs are concise summaries of cutting-edge research and practical applications featuring compact volumes of 55 to 125 pages. It means that the entire book manuscript length is 24,000-48,000 words, inclusive of references, figures, tables, equations or other additional content. The aim is to include ten chapters, each is about 4500 words including everything. The timeline of the book is yet a bit open. This call is first sent to those who have already expressed interest in participating in this book project. When all abstracts from this group have been received, the editor will evaluate them and contact some further authors still if needed.

New ways to understand the world and the people who live in it are continuously needed for social work professionals to be able to fulfill the task of social work, which is to promote promote social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (IASSW 2014). The new understandings stem from cutting edge social work research, from social work practice and the ever-changing world continuously sends signals for of change. Therefore, there is endless need for social work educators to update their materials, teaching methods and own thinking -to be continuously reflexive (Moffat 2019).
This book aims to discuss for example, but not limiting to following topics:

  • Whiteness, Eurocentrism and Wester biases in as well as decolonization and indigenization of social work knowledge base and education.
  • Voices less heard, for example members of various communities, for example LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more), People of Color, persons with disabilities and service users.
  • Societal debates, social movements and social events and developments that influence
    social work clients, society, social work practice and education, such as Black Lives
    Matter, Covid 19, neo-fascism, climate change, ageing of populations or the war in
    Ukraine.
  • The technologization of the world and social work and the use of Artificial
    Intelligence in for example surveillance and control.
  • New insights in topic that have a long history in social work education, such as ethics,
    work practices, method and methodologies and pedagogical approaches.
    The authors need to keep in mind the timeliness of the issues and the connections with the
    social work education. Authors are responsible for the language editing.

    The abstracts (100-150 words maximum) must include:
  • Title of the chapter
  • The main issue to be tackled and how it is addressed
  • The timeliness of the issue
  • Connection to social work education
    In addition, list your name, affiliation, and contact data (professional mailing address, e-mail
    address, and telephone number) of all authors and their ORCID IDs.
    Deadline for the abstracts is 31st of October 2023
    The process (as said, timeline not sure yet) of publishing goes approximately as follows:
  • Decision on included abstracts.
  • The editor composes a proposal to the publisher, which then makes the decision in
    their own timetable.
  • If accepted, a publishing agreement is made.
  • The editor calls for a short meeting and shares the instructions for writing. We can
    then make the timetable together. We can also agree to meet later again if it is
    considered beneficial.
  • Manuscripts are sent to editor according to the agreed timetable and reviewed.
  • There might be second round of editing and finalizing the manuscripts before they are
    sent to the publisher.
  • Publisher needs 4-5 months for the publishing process, the quality of the manuscript
    and the holiday times may affect this.
  • The eBook is available first; the softcover print rendition is available about 10-14
    business days later.
  • We do not unfortunately have funds for open access.
    We aim at publishing towards the end of 2024
