Amir Jamal
Dr. Aamir Jamal is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, where he serves as Director of Global Engagement and International Partnerships and leads the Master of Social Work (International Community Development) program. He also chairs the Faculty’s Global Engagement Committee and the International Affairs Committee at the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. With a PhD in International Social Work and more than 25 years of experience in global development, his work focuses on engaging men in the prevention of violence against women, grounded in a broader commitment to gender justice, social justice, and community well-being across the Global South.
His recent International projects on men’s roles in preventing violence against women is guided by decolonial and anti-oppressive frameworks that elevate local leadership, cultural knowledge, and community-driven change. His wider scholarship on gender justice, girls’ education, and prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) has informed policies for governments and international agencies. His book The Gatekeepers remains a leading contribution to understanding the role of Pashtun men in advancing gender equity.
Dr. Jamal actively promotes international social work through global research collaborations, international webinars, joint scholarly initiatives, and student and scholar mobility programs. His contributions have been recognized through awards including the City of Calgary International Achievement Award, the Arch Award for International Career Achievement, and the Sustainability Award for Faculty Research.
