Project Funding − Call for Proposals

IASSW Grants for Projects in Social Work Education

IASSW invites proposals for projects, designed to advance social work education internationally. Grants of up to US $4.000 are available for proposals that can be expected to contribute to the implementation of the IASSW Mission Statement, and to the enhancement of cooperation among schools of social work world-wide.

This is continuous aspect of IASSW activities but the final submission date for the next round of bids is May 31, 2016.

Guidelines for submissions and criteria for evaluation

In the selection of the proposals for funding, the following dimensions will be highlighted:

  1. quality of the plan
  2. consistency
  3. global and/or regional relevance of the topic
  4. clear outcomes
  5. transferability of the outcomes
  6. the variety and number of partners involved
  7. the structure of the budget (not only for individual travelling)

In order to qualify for support, proposals will have to meet the following criteria:

The project can be expected to make a direct and meaningful contribution to at least one of the following areas:

  • Curriculum development
  • Content of specific units, modules or courses
  • Field instruction
  • Teaching methods
  • Technology of instruction
  • Staff development
  • Administration of educational programs
  • Community involvement of staff and students
  • Policy of social work education.

The project has to be truly international, involving social work educators from minimally three schools in at least two countries with differing cultures or systems of social work education. The project should be expected to enhance international and cross-cultural collaboration, and may contribute to educational developments through the inclusion of schools of social work in countries where social work education is facing particular challenges.

The proposal is creative and innovative. The proposal is clearly written, and presented in the following format:

  • Title of Proposal.
  • Names, affiliations and addresses of all participants. The coordinator, or contact person, should be identified.
  • Rationale and purpose of the project (5-10 lines).
  • Action plan, i.e. activities planned as part of the project (5-10 lines).
  • Expected contribution and outcomes of the project (5-10 lines).
  • Dissemination of the project outcomes.
  • Time table.
  • Budget, specifying all expense items, as well as any expected income from other sources. Please note that the IASSW grant can be used only for direct (out of pocket) expenditures, not for salaries of the applicants or for administrative overhead. The grant cannot be used only for individual travelling of few people.
  • Short (5−7 lines) biographical sketches of the participants.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The project coordinator and two thirds of the partners have to be IASSW school members and one third can be individual members.
  • Two years membership before the grant application is required and the membership has to continue during the implementation of the project. The committee can waive the two year rule case by case.
  • A new grant can be given to the coordinating school after three years from the completion of the previous project.
  • Grants are not given only for travel expenses
  • The selection of the projects is implemented in regional and thematic categories.

Review, notification of decisions and process in relation to successful applicants

Proposals will be reviewed by the International Projects Committee consisting of members appointed by the Board of Directors of IASSW. The recommendations of the committee will be presented to the Executive Committee for ratification.  In the case of successful applications, grants will be paid as follows:

  • 1500 USD when the proposal has been approved, and the chair of the committee has been notified that the project is about to be implemented.
  • 1500 USD with the submission of an interim report.
  • 1000 USD after the submission of a final report.

The designated contact persons will be notified of the committee’s decision by July 15, 2016.

Interim report

The interim report should include:

  • An account of all the activities undertaken so far
  • Outcomes of these activities
  • Activities planned for the coming months.
  • The report is expected to have 1000−1500 words
  • Material for the IASSW web page: pictures, summaries, power points, videos, drawings, interviews, descriptions, quotations. Links to the original material and publications based on the project can be given to be published on the IASSW website.

Final Report

The final report should include a written academic report, financial report and one copy of materials created as part of the project (articles, power point presentations, videos, pictures, ethnographic material etc.). The report and the material can be published on the IASSW web site or linked to the IASSW web site. A link should be provided to materials available on the internet.

The written report should include the following parts:

  • Rationale and purpose of the project
  • Description of the process of implementation
  • A discussion of outcomes and/or feedback to the project.
  • (The concluding sections should address the transferability of the project, i.e. the possibility of implementing a similar project or parts of it in other settings).
  • The final written report is expected to be of 2,500 − 4,000 words and should be preceded by an executive summary (not more than 200 words). An account of expenditures should be appended to the report.
  • IASSW is expected to be mentioned in any publication based on the funded projects.The preferred method of communication is by email and material should be presented in a form which can be added to the IASSW website.

Informing about the projects on the IASSW web site

IASSW is developing the information delivery and visibility of the projects. That’s why we encourage you from the beginning to supply us with all kind of materials (like pictures, summaries, power points, videos, drawings, interviews, descriptions, quotations) of your project to be published on the web site of IASSW. The publication committee will select and edit the material to be published. Please, send those materials toanna.metteri@uta.fi
